High Peak Pocatello 70 Liter Internal Frame Backpack Review

High Peak Pocatello 70 Liter Internal Frame Backpack
Average Reviews:

I'm one who think that good things shouldn't cost an arm and a leg. This pack has some very nice features that the $200.00+ packs have. Bellows pockets. Plenty of room for the sleeping bag, bunches of space, easy zippers, a rain cover and is fully adjustable in all the right places.
Cons: It's a bit heavy at 5.5lbs ..but I've seen quite a few of the more expensive packs at the same weight. Also the bottle pockets aren't easy to reach with the pack on and loaded ...can be done but not easy.
I've paid more and had fewer features than this pack. Not a bad buy at all ...now I'm off to the Cascades for a good season of testing!
Fall Update:
After a summer backpacking around the Washington Wilderness areas, I would still have to say that this pack was a good buy. Plenty of room and easy to get to everything. So much room! Although a summer of backpacking sure helped point out the bad parts, two of them mainly: The back is heavy and it doesn't completely sit on your back well. The contour allows air to the back which is nice but it is as if the lumbar support is off a bit ..a little to low mainly.
At the same time, the pros outweighed the cons enough so that I didn't go back to my old pack which is *much* lighter with better padding and I used this pack through the whole 2006 season.

I have had this pack for a few years now and it's great. I got it for $38 at sams club and it was the best $38 I've spent. I've tried packs made by "real backpacking companys" and don't like them as good as this one. It feels good to use and has all the room you could need. I do alot of backpacking and don't use crappy gear, I have a Windpro, Hiker Pro, MUV, waterworks II, and a white box to name some of the great gear I use. most sams clubs have these packs in the summer and they are a great buy!!!!!!!

this pack is well made, not to heavy for all the gear i carry, i am not a minimum carry backpacker. I packed a sleeping bag, sleeping pad, small stove and fuel canister, small lantern, full mess kit, an extra fleece jacket, gloves, small radio, two one liter canteens(military), rain poncho, under armor top and bottom, first aid kit, compass,a eurika solo tent, camp size saw, small flashlight, boonie hat,and i still have room to spare! It has multiple tie downs and compression straps to keep large loads stable. it also has a full size built in raincover that will cover the whole load nicely. the top comes off to form a fanny pack but i havent used that yet. I would recommend this pack for people like me who travel with a lot of gear.

Bibler Ahwahnee Tent Review

Bibler Ahwahnee Tent

With this 2 man tent you don't need 2 tents: one for winter and one for the tropics. I was worried before I purchased about condensation on a single wall tent but it turns out this is no problem. Ventillation is excellent - summer or winter! I use it as a one man tent (it's light enough!) and it is sooo roomy and bright. When the weather is fine and warm just unzip both doors for a 6 billion star view. It is unlike any tent I have ever owned. Follow instructions for setting up and it is then easy. It's probably not up to full on winter gales when pitched in stupid places but for anything else it covers it all - and with style!

Teton Sports 5200 Internal Frame Backpack Review

Teton Sports 5200 Internal Frame Backpack

This is a nice pack with lots of features. Great for beginners and how can you beat the price? Wow. I should have noted from the other reviewer, that this pack is *small* (he could not get it to fit and he was 6'2"). While capicity is very large, and lots of attachment options exist, the frame is set up for very small people. I am 5'10" and set the pack to the very largest frame setting and still had serious pain carrying the pack when full (45lbs). This pack is truly a woman's or more likely a youth sized pack. On the smallest settings it fits my [...]son perfectly - so I am keeping it for him.

The Teton Fox 75+10L internal frame backpack is a great fit for the serious hiker. Comfort-wise, the Fox is outfitted with dual aluminum stays that adjust to the shape of your back, along with contoured shoulder, lumbar, and hip pads. In addition, the height of the shoulder straps is adjustable, helping the pack accommodate a wide range of torso lengths. The upshot is a comfortable, ergonomic pack that won't put undue stress on your back and shoulders even after a full day of hiking.
On the interior, the 5,187-cubic-inch pack holds all your gear in its top-loading main compartment, expandable front section, and unique sleeping bag compartment. Meanwhile, hikers looking for an easy place to access their first-aid kits and mini flashlights will delight in the pair of hideaway side pockets. The design concludes with an attached rain fly that keeps your gear dry and is compatible with separately sold hydration systems.

Amazon.com Backpack Guide Finding the Right Backpack For extended trips into the backcountry, there's no getting around the fact that you'll have to carry life-sustaining supplies on your back. Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for a backpack:
Internal vs. External Up until late 1970's, external frame packs--which consist of an exposed, lightweight metal frame attached to a fabric pack-bag--were the only thing going. In recent years, though, packs that place the support structure of the pack inside the pack, known as internal frame packs, have boomed in popularity.
The good news about internal frame packs is that they hold the weight of your load close to your body, making it easier to maintain your balance on uneven terrain. Meanwhile, internals provide stiffness and support, but they are not completely rigid, which makes them more flexible when you're doing active sports. With the added flexibility comes a high degree of compressibility, meaning you can use the pack's compression straps to cinch down your load and keep items from shifting and throwing you off balance. Internals also sport slimmer shapes that allow for more arm movement in all directions--another big plus for off-trail bushwhackers, skiers and climbers. Last but not least, internal frame packs offer a greater range of adjustability in the shoulder harness and hip-belt than external frame packs.
There are some negatives for internals. First, once packed, it can be difficult to grab needed items out of them quickly. And because internal frame packs consolidate the load into a single, body-hugging unit, proper packing is very important. To distribute the weight properly, you should pack your heaviest items close to your back and in the middle portion of the pack-bag. Plan on getting a sweaty back with an internal, too, given the fact that they are pressed right against you. Finally, internal frame packs are priced higher than external models.
External frame packs are very good at focusing the weight of a load directly to the right place: your load-loving hips. While internals, when properly packed, do this effectively, too, you can always rest assured that an external will distribute the load evenly, no matter how unevenly packed it may be. Externals also offer easy access to your gear via multiple, easily-accessible compartments. Plus, because externals don't situate the load directly against your back, you'll enjoy far more air flow. Finally, if you're on a budget, or you're buying for a growing child, externals are more affordable.
If you plan on hiking on easy to moderate trails and you don't need a lot of body movement, you'll probably be fine with an external. But because externals are so rigid and inflexible, challenging trails or any kind of off-trail pursuit can become painful and frustrating. Also know that your balance is far more compromised with an external frame pack during activities like stream crossings and hops through talus fields.
Packs for Shorter Trips In addition to backpacks designed for overnight trips, rucksacks are great for day-trips, warm-weather one-nighters, single-day ski trips, or fast alpine assaults. Some rucksacks blur the line between backpack and rucksack with integrated internal supports and sophisticated hip belts and shoulder harnesses. Choose a pack in this category based on your intended use. Short day hikers don't need an internal frame, while climbers and skiers with heavier loads likely do.
Sizes and Capacities Packs in the 3,000 cubic inches and lower category are good for day hikes or overnighters in warm weather with minimal gear. Packs in the 3,000 to 4,000 cubic inch range are good for one- or two-night trips in colder weather. If you're going to be out for up to three days, look for a pack in the sub-4,000 cubic inch range. Choose a pack with 5,000-6,000 cubic inches for week-long outings. And finally, for trips lasting a week or more, you'll need something in the 6,000-plus cubic inch category. Keep in mind, though, that bigger packs weigh more, and since every ounce counts, you'll want to choose a pack that offers just enough space for your outings and no more.

Black Diamond Eldorado Tent 2-Person 4-Season Review

Black Diamond Eldorado Tent 2-Person 4-Season

I bought this tent about 4 years ago. At first I was reluctant as it looked flimsy sitting by Montain Hardware and North Face tents, but time has proven that first impression wrong. The tent is sturdy, extremelly waterproof and easy to set up. I especially like the fact you buid it from inside (which is great when you're freezing or in pouring rain). Everything has been though of, including the black floor and bright yellow top which make the tent dry up as soon as the sun is up. The tent is also very light so perfect for a backpack. My only pet peeve is the room inside. Yes, two people fit inside, but only barely.
Still, hard to find a better tent than this one.

Super light, super strong, waterproof, breathable and easy to set up, the 2-person Bibler Eldorado was originally designed for the extreme mountain climber. This tent can be pitched on ledges that are no larger than your couch! Yet any outdoor adventurer will appreciate the design and features that make it the ideal tent at altitude. The Eldorado weighs an astonishing 4 pounds, 8 ounces, yet rolls up small enough to fit into the side pocket of many internal frame packs. Two poles crisscross inside the single tent wall, eliminating hard-to-thread sleeves, and ending naturally into the eaves of the roof. The result is maximum strength and more headroom per square foot of floor space than most tents.Product Features

TETON Sports Explorer 4000 Internal Frame Backpack Review

TETON Sports Explorer 4000 Internal Frame Backpack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read the earlier review about the sleeping bag pocket being too small, but bought this backpack anyway. Sure enough, you weren't lying! As soon as I took the backpack out of the box, I grabbed my sleeping bag and tried to stuff it in there. After about 5 minutes of jockying it around, I did manage to BARELY get the thing zipped up. However, the sleeping bag I used is my summer bag. If I tried to stuff my winter bag in there, with bivy sack and stuff sack, there's no way it would all fit. This can be a problem if you're intending on doing a legitimate backpacking trip in high altitudes with cold weather. All this being said, I'm in the Army and I take a different approach to this issue than most civilian hikers probably do. In my opinion, you don't need to have your sleeping bag available for quick access. The only time you use it is at night, when you'll have time to dig in your bag and get it anyway. Since the sleeping bag pocket is too small, just throw your sleeping bag in the big compartment...this compartment is large enough to easily hold a winter bag. Use the sleeping bag compartment for more important items that you might actually need to access quickly (medical kit, rain gear, flashlight, signaling device, GPS, knife, etc.) Therefore, problem solved. No need to return the bag.
Another negative I saw mentioned in a previous review is all the excess straps that hang loose. Not a problem...just get some 100mph tape and tie it all down. Too easy.
The rest of the pack seems to be quality. The material seems durable and there is a good deal of padding along the back and straps for a comfortable fit. Everything is adjustable so you won't have any problems getting this backpack to fit all shapes and sizes of hikers. It also has a quickly accessible rain cover which will definitely come in handy during those suprise thunderstorms.
All in all, this pack seems to be pretty reasonable for the price you pay. I'm going to Colorado for a 3 day hike soon and will be taking this pack with me. I'll update this review upon return to let you know how it holds up in the elements.

Twin Arch 2 Tent - 2 Person by Mountain Hardwear Review

Twin Arch 2 Tent - 2 Person by Mountain Hardwear
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the MH Twin Arch 2 on a closeout that included the footprint. Great score! The tent is listed as a 2 person but 2 people would be pretty 'cozy'.
Pros:
Freestanding. Having a freestanding tent helps a lot when you can't get solid anchor points all the way around.
Setup. Setting the tent is up pretty easy. It's also possible to use just the footprint and fly for a lightweight shelter.
Tall. A lot of smaller 1-2 person tents are usually designed in a manner where you're lucky if you can sit all the way up at the mouth and then they taper down sharply to the foot. This tent is rather tall compared to most 1-2 person tents. I'm 5'7" and can situp at the foot and can stand hunched at the mouth.
Waterproof. The specs say that the tent is 100% waterproof. I have yet to test that claim, however. But the construction seems solid, sealed seams, flapped zipper, and the rainfly is designed as to not dump water into the tent when you unzip it.
Cons:
Weight. Because the thing is a bit bigger than most 1-2 person tents, it also means extra weight and pack space. I'll take that trade-off, though.
Setup. Although the tent is very easy/simple to setup, it does seem to take a bit more time than previous 1-2 person tents I've had in the past.
Lack of a pocket. Almost every tent I've ever owned has had at least 1 inner storage pocket. There are none with this tent. Not a deal breaker, but something I was surprised to see missing.
Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase especially at the price I was able to get. I plan on really putting the tent through the gauntlet when I take it on a small bike tour this Fall.

I had a huge challenge of finding a solid 4 season tent, that was fairly light, roomy, and allowed me the option of using it during summer. After much debate I finally got the Andromeda Tent II. The tent is a bit complicated at first but with good series of videos from exped on youtube and fantastic customer support via email, the tent has unlocked it self to me in a wonderful way. The tent is very roomy for 32sq. ft due to tunnel design and the vestibule is out of this world! 33sq ft. Making it an awesome haven from a storm, bugs, or cooking. Overall, get this tent if you want a very roomy, solid 4 season tent, with options for summer!

Kelty Gunnison 2.1 Tent Review

Kelty Gunnison 2.1 Tent
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this for use as a two person backpacking and car camping tent. I also bought a REI half dome two person tent to which I compared it. These are very similarly designed tents. I set up both tents (in my living room) and did a side-by-side comparison. I never actually used the tent and so can only speak to its design and not its actual performance. I ultimately returned the Kelty Gunnison 2.1 tent but it was a close call and I will explain the good & the not so bad below.
First, I feel that for the weight & price, it would be hard to find a more spacious tent. The Kelty Gunnison felt a little more spacious than the REI half dome which was no slouch in this category as well. This is consistent with the Kelty's reported 3 more square feet (37 sq ft total) than the REI half dome. For people who are tall (over 6'--I am 6'2") this is a very long tent at 92". This is 2 inches longer than the rei half dome. Both tents are longer than many ultralight tents that I have sadly found to typically not be be designed with people over 6' in mind. For instance, the REI QUARTER dome is a tight fit for any one over 6'. The Gunnison is also listed at a 40" peak height which is fairly decent and I was able to sit upright in the tent comfortably. However, if you are 6'2" or above, the extra inch of height in the REI half dome is just enough that you can get a little farther from the center of the tent & still be upright. This would be handy if you were sitting in the tent with someone at night or riding out a storm. Weight wise the Kelty gunnsion is listed as a few ounces less in weight than the REI half dome. The kelty is reported to have a package weight of 5 lbs 9 oz. I considered the weight difference to be insignificant. There are lighter weight options for two person tents, but they will not have as much space and will be more costly.
The vestibules for the Kelty are massive with each vestibule being listed at 12 sq ft for the kelty and 9 sq ft each for the REI half dome. I obviously did not stake out either tent in my house, but the kelty vestibules definitely seemed larger. These vestibules would leave plenty of room for backpacks and probably the proverbial kitchen sink as well.
Next I will address the design of the tent. The kelty uses a plastic, but reasonably sturdy appearing hub for the tent poles whereas the half dome uses a metal one. On the Kelty tent, the rainfly and tent body are connected to the tent poles using plastic Jake's Foot connectors. On the half dome they are connected through the more traditional metal grommets. The entrance doors on both sides of the Kelty are smaller and more in the center of the tent than for the REI half dome. With the rainfly on, this made it slightly more difficult for easy entrance & exit with the Gunnison. This may theoretically also mean the Gunnsion would offer more protection from the rain getting in and out of the tent, but I obviously did not get to test this theory. I also am not aware of problems with the half dome in this regard. The overall tent body and rainfly of both tents seemed very similar in regards to material. The vents and netting also seemed reasonably comparable and I can only guess that ventilation in both tents would be reasonably similar.
For me, I ultimately chose the half dome over the gunnison but it was a tough call and I liked the gunnison's design as well. My biggest issue with the tent was the plastic hub and the plastic Jake's foot connectors. These are used in other tents as well. They may work great, but I personally prefer the metal hub and grommets of the half dome. I also liked the size and position of the doors much more in the half dome. The gunnsion was a little more spacious and had larger vestibules, but I felt this difference was not too dramatic.
In summary, I felt the Kelty Gunnsion 2.1 is a spacious tent with large vestibules at a decent price. It is a great option for tall individuals. I personally do not like the Jake's foot connectors or the plastic hub as they do not appear very rugged. However, I do not have any evidence that this would ever be a problem in the field longterm. I would have preferred doors that were a little larger and less centered. However, this may not be as much of an issue for smaller individuals and may be advantageous in rain. My preference would also be for a lighter tent, but for the space and money I dont think you can find a better deal. If you were wanting a lighter two person tent that would also be good for taller people, I would check out the big agnes emerald series or the the big agnes copper spur series. However, the improved weight is offset by smaller space and higher price.

Teton Sports Scout 3400 Internal Frame Backpack Review

this pack is overall a good quality pack. It has tons of pockets and loops to hook many things on. I have walkies, knives, shoes and much more dangling from mine.
It's lightweight and the pack has lots of customization options. If you are a large person (6' 0" and up) this pack can conform to you!
I like the options, including the sleeping bag pouch. My sleeping bag barely fit though...It was a challenge to stuff my bag and get it zipped, let me tell you! Afterwards, I was able to place a tent, 4 days of food and clothes, a stove, lantern, pillow, pad, cups, walkies and so much more. Fully loaded for a summer hike kept me

Boasting a compact main compartment that measures a mere 3,696 cubic inches, the Teton Wilderness 55 internal frame backpack is ideally sized for the light backpacker or young camper. Comfort-wise, the Wilderness 55 is outfitted with dual aluminum stays that adjust to the shape of your back, along with contoured shoulder, lumbar, and waist pads. In addition, the height of the shoulder straps is adjustable, helping the pack accommodate a wide range of torso lengths. The upshot is a well-fitting, lightweight pack (4.5 pounds without gear) that won't put undue stress on your back and shoulders even after a full day of hiking.
On the interior, the pack holds a modest amount of gear in its top-loading main compartment and distinct sleeping bag compartment. Also present are several smaller pouches--a pair of side zippered pockets, side and mesh front pockets, and a top zippered pocket, to be precise--for storing such items as Swiss Army knives, snacks, and mini flashlights. And as with any good hiking pack, the Wilderness 55 includes a padded water bladder pocket for trail hydration. The design concludes with a rain fly that keeps your gear dry in wet conditions.
Amazon.com Backpack Guide Finding the Right BackpackFor extended trips into the backcountry, there's no getting around the fact that you'll have to carry life-sustaining supplies on your back.

TETON Sports Scout3400 Internal Frame Backpack (Mecca Orange) Review

TETON Sports Scout3400 Internal Frame Backpack (Mecca Orange)

I'M 4'11". I have big problems finding packs that are comfortable for me. I carried this pack for two weeks through Guatemala, where wheeled luggage isn't a good option.
The pack work excellently. I carried 26 - 36 lbs, depending on how much liquid I was packing. The shoulder straps are very easily adjustable for different height people, and the different pockets made it easy to find and store things. I particularly liked and used the handy rain cover. I never ran out of room and could have easily carried more junk...
This pack is a screaming deal, which makes it even better.
