GoLite Shangri-La 3 Nest Review

GoLite Shangri-La 3 Nest
Average Reviews:

Horrible tent. Not a four season!...thought this would be great...light, intuitive design and GoLite seems cool right? Absolutely wrong!
I used it twice, two nights and the tent ripped. The walls started getting tiny holes in them that will let in water. After only two nights! When I emailed customer service asking if this is normal, I got a three line email response; send it back or fix it yourself. Again, I responded and asked Greta Oberschmidt, their North American Assistant Sales Manager, if the tent was supposed to be delicate as I had found it to be...I received another smug email saying `what do you want from us' and informing me that I would be unable to see the microscopic holes (quoting my email) in the tent...unbelievably uncool!
I am completely at a loss as to the customer service and their Shangri-La 3 product.
Go with another company, there are tons out there that would stand by their product and their customers. GoLite is not one of them. I will not recommend them or their products.

Zephyr 3 Person Tent Review

While this is marketed as a 3 person tent, it is really for 2. Perhaps two adults and a child but no way you could really put 3 full size adults in this tent. That said, for the price it is really great. Lightweight and so easily packable on long hikes. The full coverage fly is great in the weather and our stood up to 25 mph winds and driving rain and was dry as a bone in side (definitely recomment using the tiedowns and adding in extra lines and stakes for the additional tiedown points). We have used these on 3 seperate hike trips so far and they are still serving well. We got 3 for our church men's hike ministry team for use by people without their own tents and everyone loves them. They really like how easy they are to setup and how dry they are in the rain. They also like that there are two doors so either person can exit without having to climb over the other and the dual vestubules that have plenty of room to keep your boots and pack dry.

New Alps Mountaineering Zephyr 2 Aluminum Poles Sage/Rust 3 Season 2 Person Tent With Rain Fly Review

New Alps Mountaineering Zephyr 2 Aluminum Poles Sage/Rust 3 Season 2 Person Tent With Rain Fly
Average Reviews:

This tent was extremely easy to set up. The rain fly is a little more work, but within a few minutes its done. Tent could always use a little more room, but keeping it light weight is important. I packed this for 3 days and used it for 3 nights. It did well. Temps got down below freezing with a little wind and the tent kept us warm. Looks to be a great tent for warm summer nights because of the ventilation. The only complaint I have is with the hanging mesh storage compartment. The way it hooks on to the top of the tent, it slopes. Meaning stuff easily falls out. And being right above your head, well don't put anything of any weight in it. I like the tent and would recommend it.

Vaude Power Odyssee 2 Persons Tent, Orange Review

Vaude Power Odyssee 2 Persons Tent, Orange
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The big difference between this tent and most that you can buy in the US is that it pitches fly-sheet-first. So instead of pitching the inner tent and then throwing the fly sheet over it, if needed, you pitch the outer tent and then raise the inner tent inside it.
I have had both types of tent and I have to admit that this is the style for me.
The down side to these tents is that if you want to keep the bugs out then you have to pitch the whole tent, you can't just have the inner. So fair weather campers in California are going to hate this.
The up side to this tent is that you can pitch it without getting your gear and your tent all soaking wet.
In the event that you need to pitch or strike the tent in the wet you can deal with your gear and your inner tent under cover. An anecdote may help: I was walking in the north west of Scotland in early October. As I approached my camping spot near Arisaig the heavens opened. Reaching my site I dropped my pack on the ground, pulled the tent off the top, unrolled it into four parts (pegs, poles, inner and outer). I always roll the groundsheet around the rest, so I had unrolled that on the ground. Without unfolding it I wrapped it over my pack and put the pegs on top. Now all my gear and the non-waterproof part of the tent were under cover. I unfolded the outer over the pile of gear and stuck the poles in. I now had a waterproof enclosure over my gear. I grabbed a few pegs to secure the outer corners and dived inside. I could now take off my rain gear and finish pitching the tent in the dry. In the morning it was still raining, but I was able to get everything except the outer tent packed in the dry before I took it down.
So for me this is the tent to have. If you camp in the majority of this continent, where getting wet during pitching and striking is likely, then you should seriously consider this tent or another with external poles.
As an added benefit, the poles don't run on the outer and the inner doesn't touch the outer, so there's less wear and greater longevity for the outer and the condensation doesn't transfer to the inner in cool weather.
For this specific tent, I find it very good. Build quality is great and there's adequate ventilation. It's not too heavy to carry, though it is a significant item. I recommend it over all the inner-first style tents.

Mountain Hardwear Drifter 3 Tent Review

Mountain Hardwear Drifter 3 Tent

Bought this tent to go camping in the mountains for my first time since childhood. Camped at 11,000+ feet in late October. Temps were 20F-40F. We got some high winds and around 2-4 inches of sleet/snow on the first night, and I actually felt some sleet hit my face periodically throughout the night through the rain fly, but not enough to make me significantly wet or cold. Not sure yet how it would hold up in heavier rain. I do love that it is extremely lightweight and a piece-of-cake to set up.

The Oasis has double doors on both the tent and integrated vestibule, providing easy entry/exit and access to all of your gear. Built with a 360-degree-view mesh upper and a nylon ripstop lower perimeter for privacy, the Oasis has excellent ventilation without feeling too open to the prying eyes of others. Mountain Hardwear Drifter 3 Person Tent Review

Mountain Hardwear Drifter 3 Person Tent
Average Reviews:

The good news - This tent is water proof, plenty of room for two, and very easy to set up. The tent did include a gear loft that I liked very much. Stuffing the tent back into the stuff bag was easy as well with a little extra room in the bag.
The not-to-bad-news, the tent is a bit heavier than the super light tent and a bit bulkier. There are two mesh pockets built into the tent, but they were kind of flimsy and could not figure out what I would put into them. I have another Mountain Hardwear tent with better quality mesh pockets.
The bad news, The tent footprint designed for this tent is a little too big for the tent allowing rain drops to be caught between footprint and tent. There were puddles under the tent, but the tent bottom is thick enough to keep the rain out. The next time I set up the tent I had to tuck the footprint way under the tent to prevent it from catching rain. Also, the tent fly on the non-vestibule areas lean against the tent allowing the rain easier access to the bottom of the tent. I had to improvise the fly away from the tent to help keep rain drops away from the tent as much as possible.
I have only had this tent for a very short time and therefore have not used it much.

Vista Tent - 3 Person by Black Diamond Review

Vista Tent - 3 Person by Black Diamond
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I finally got around to testing this tent under a number of different circumstances after I purchased it a couple of months ago.
First it's quite spacey and like most 3 person tents it is very comfortable with two people.
The vestibules could have come a bit larger as there is not that much space to leave your backpack.
I like the the two doors.Makes it easier to get out when you don't have to crawl over the other person in the tent.
Although the external doors are fitted somewhat a bit awkward -meaning not exactly over the inner doors. So you kinda have to get around from one end to the other somehow.
All the mesh is nice if you want to watch the stars at night for instance but if it does get cold it can become a bit breathy in there, with the fly over it that is.
So definetly not more than a 3season tent, maybe even more like a 2 1/2 season one depending on where you camp.
I used it in the Australian outback/bush and in the mountains,in sun and hot tropical conditions and in pouring rain and mountain chills.
It performed very well in the rain but you need to have a good footprint.
I tried some polyester tarp stuff but because of the different size at the ends I have decided to order the original footprint from Backcountry.
Overall it is a good lightweight tent for camping and hiking but not for really cold weather (have a marmot pinnacle sleepingbag and good mat).
The one thing that is really strange is it seems to attract large crowds of flies, sandflies, and the like-must be because of the colour(?) I guess.
Can become a bit annoying depending on where you stay.
and they could have added a couple of spare pegs.
But in that price range a reliable and easy to put up lightweight option which performs well in rain.

Big Agnes Emerald Mountain SL 3 - Three Person Tent Review

Big Agnes Emerald Mountain SL 3 - Three Person Tent
Average Reviews:

Great ventilation... I was able to stay inside the tent with an open rainfly (shaded) at 90 degrees. That gossamer mesh tent body means no condensation to contend with, and great views on clear nights. I was also very impressed with the weight... light enough to tempt an ultralight backpacker. We stayed dry throughout a 9 hour downpour, too! The down side (and its a big one, in my opinion) is that the tent body itself is very delicate (natch, being all mesh). Staking the tent down with the edges taut resulted in "runs" in the mesh netting in various areas. I didn't really stretch the tent incredibly taut, just snug, but it resulted in several little 1/2" runs scattered throught the tent canopy and upper sides. Stake the tent loosely (or not at all) and stake the fly taught and you should be fine, I think. However, if you're camping in windy conditions this could be a problem.

This tent has a very nice design, and is very light. It stands strong in moderate winds and rain. I would have rated it 4.5 stars if it wasn't for the seams that are not taped or factory sealed. For a tent in this price range I would have expected a tent ready to use out of the box.
I use it mostly in sea kayak trips, along with a Golite Hex 3.

The amazingly versatile Black Diamond Skylight 3-Person 3-Season Tent is equally at home in pouring west coast rain or sweltering desert heat. This tent so impressed the editors at Outside Magazine that they gave it the 2006 Gear of the Year Award. When the weather assures a tent-bound day, the EPIC canopy fabric fights off the water and provides excellent breathability. Stash your packs under the vestibule to keep them dry while you play cards inside. When the weather is so hot that you're afraid of melting, pull back the attached fly to expose the mesh half canopy of the Black Diamond Skylight Tent. I had a huge challenge of finding a solid 4 season tent, that was fairly light, roomy, and allowed me the option of using it during summer. After much debate I finally got the Andromeda Tent II. The tent is a bit complicated at first but with good series of videos from exped on youtube and fantastic customer support via email, the tent has unlocked it self to me in a wonderful way. The tent is very roomy for 32sq. ft due to tunnel design and the vestibule is out of this world! 33sq ft. Making it an awesome haven from a storm, bugs, or cooking. Overall, get this tent if you want a very roomy, solid 4 season tent, with options for summer!

Chinook Long Star 3-Person Fiberglass Pole Tent Review

Chinook Long Star 3-Person Fiberglass Pole Tent
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this tent because as a first-timer, I was looking for something easy to use and reasonably priced. This tent was extremely easy for one person to set up (though the directions say something about a sleeve which I've still never found...) and at 7' by 7', it is roomy enough for me and my dog to sleep comfortably. (Before I bought it, I used painters' tape to lay out a 7' by 7' square on the floor to make sure my big sleeping bag, gear, dog, and I would all fit inside comfortably). I'm not sure how it will hold up to the test of time- it does feel very light and I question just how sturdy it is, but I had it set up in some significant winds and it did just fine. One of the features I really like is having the front vestibule. It's very handy for putting things that you want out of view, but not necessarily in your tent- hiking boots, dog towels, etc. The vestibule has two openings - one on the front and one on the side, which is kind of hard to see in pictures. The tent comes in a small bag, and is light to carry. It is ideal for 1-2 people. 3 would be kind of tough to cram in here though, someone would definitely be touching the walls of the tent- never good for keeping dry. One downer is that if you want to have the windows of the tent open, you have to go around to the outside of the tent to open them on the fly. Also, you'll want to get some decent tent stakes- the ones that come with it aren't really that sturdy and bent the first time I used them. Other than those small inconveniences, I've been very happy with this tent. I'll update once I've had to use it in some weather to let you know how it holds up. I've already waterproofed it with some Camp-Dry, but we'll see how well it does in a rain.
Update: Had some rain this weekend, and it did great- no leaks. I did use three cans of Camp Dry, which may have been overkill, but I was very impressed with how sturdy it felt in the wind and with the fact that even the corners stayed nice and dry.

Sierra Designs Lightning XT 3 Three-Person Ultralight Tent Review

Sierra Designs Lightning XT 3 Three-Person Ultralight Tent
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using a North Face Starfire (tunnel-dome style) tent for 12 years on backpacking and a few car-camping trips with zero complaints - at least until my wife and I got a black lab dog. Quarters were cozy for the two of us, but for the three of us it was downright cramped. So we purchased this Sierra Designs Lightning XT tent for our backpacking outings to have extra room for our dog and gear. We like to hike, camp, and backpack year round in Idaho, so we get everything from 100 degree heat (for a few weeks, anyways) to wet and rainy Spring and Fall seasons, to 10 or 12 feet of snow. It is all usually accompanied by wind of some form or another. We haven't put three people in it, so I can't speak for whether or not it is a roomy 3 person tent, but it sure is a comfy and spacious 2 man tent, even with the dog.
The tent is super light weight; it packs down to the same size and weighs about the same as my North Face 2 man tent. Splitting it between two people makes even better and not at all bulky or heavy in a pack. The tent is almost entirely mesh, which my wife really likes on starry nights, with a bathtub style waterproof bottom. The rainfly is coated nylon and comes down just an inch or two shy of the ground with two vestibules, since there are two doors on the tent. It hooks in to the tent corners where the tent poles hook in, as well clips on to the poles for added stability. Setting the poles up is different than other tents I've used, but seems like it will hold up well in sub-hurricane winds. It is easier to do with two people, but it can be set up by one person if needs be. The tent doesn't have sleeves for the poles, there are just clips every foot or so which seems a little less bomb-proof than my North Face tent, but I haven't had any problems. The poles are hubbed, which also seems a bit less bomb-proof, but the major loads and stresses placed on the poles doesn't go through the hubs so I don't think it will be an issue in the future. The third less bomb-proof item is the fabric - its a little lighter and thinner than my North Face tent to save on weight and bulk. However, the poles, fabric, and clips are all very high quality, so I seriously doubt that I will have any issues with reliability or durability with this tent.
The idea to use Jake's Feet connectors, hubbed poles, and a full mesh top aren't brand new, and most of the big manufacturers buil tents this way. So I figure I won't knock the design unless I really do have a problem. Hence, it still get's 5 stars because it is a high quality, spacious, and VERY light and packable tent. Overall, I'm very pleased with the tent and expect years of service out of it without any issues.

Need a spacious three-person tent but don't want to be weighed down on the trail? Turn to the Sierra Lightning XT three-person ultralight tent, which offers a new pole configuration that dramatically expands the interior space, but weighs a mere 5 pounds 10 ounces. The tent is plenty roomy, with 42 square feet of sleeping space and two small vestibules. It's also tough enough to hold up to year-round use thanks to its 20-denier nylon body material and 40-denier HT nylon fly material.
Features:
Ball cap connector: The ball cap eliminates the tip and grommet at the end of ridge poles. The cap's unique shape allows the ball cap to pivot and rotate without release.
SQ ring: The SQ ring attaches to the inside of the tent fly, where it easily connects to the ridge pole and tent fly without requiring Velcro or a pole end pocket.
SuperSeal Floor: Combining the benefits of catenary and bathtub floors, the SuperSeal Floor is equipped with a raised, taped, perimeter seam that keeps water safely outside. The floor also maintains a tighter pitch with a better wind line than other floors to prevent flapping.
Quick Pitch Swivel Hub: With an increased angle of rotation, the Quick Pitch Swivel Hub helps reduce the possibility of pitching errors and makes setup faster. The tent body features an H-Clip, which easily connects to the bottom of the hub to create tension up to the peak of the tent.
DAC Featherlite NSL poles: Offering the best strength-to-weight ratio of any tent pole available, the thick-diameter DAC Featherlite NSL poles are a Sierra staple. The poles boast a thick diameter but a thin wall, increasing strength at the connection points while simultaneously saving weight. The poles' unique joining insert also allows for a cleaner, smoother transition when setting up tents with Reverse Combi Technology.
Tunnel Dome: This innovative Sierra architecture combines the strengths of both dome and tunnel tents in a single unified design. Tunnel Dome tents borrow the freestanding ease of setup and large doors from dome tents, and the steep walls, covered doors, and spacious interiors of tunnel tents.

Amazon.com Tent Guide Selecting a Tent Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Expect the Worst In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.
Three- and Four-Season Tents For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.
For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.
Domes and Tunnels Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.
Size Matters Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.
Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

Kelty Salida 2 Backpacking 2 Person Tent Review

I've beeen looking for a 2 man backpacking 3 season tent under 4lbs for about 6 months.
I was actually narrowing it down to the Kelty Grand Mesa 2 (2010) and the Teton 2. Both are very similar in size and weight with the only difefrence being the door locations.
Mesa has door on small side while Teton has door on wide side. But Teton didnt have a complete fly.
Not only does the Salida have a wide door and large vestibule but it has more screen than the rest. A complete fly. Gear loft. Better color. Lighter. Need I say more.
I got it for $114 on ebay.

I purchased my Nemo Losi 3P for for $325 from HumbleOutdoors, it came with a free footprint.
By adding only one extra pound of weight, NEMO increased the interior from 32 to 50 sq ft. I love the Losi 3P pole configuration which provides super strength and almost vertical walls for max usable interior space. Two people can move around in this tent, definitely worth the extra pound.

I got this tent on Amazon for a little under $200 and for that price it is a good tent. My wife and two kids(4 & 7 yrs old) have backpacked with this tent twice already. It hasn't rained hard yet, but so far has been easy to use seems to be well made.
There are lighter, more expensive tents out there, but this one serves the purpose for

ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 2 Backpacking Tent Review

ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 2 Backpacking Tent

I have not camped in this tent yet. I will give my first impressions and hopefully update the review after using the tent.
This tent has all the features of tents costing twice as much. It is a great value. The quality appears to be top notch. The aluminum poles are small and lightweight but fit together perfectly and are strong.
I did a lot of research before purchasing this tent. I liked that it has two doors and two vestibules. Also, I am very weight conscious and the 4.7 lbs is pretty good for this size tent. From my research I would have only saved maybe 3 ounces for a higher priced tent and would have had to settle for one door, one vestibule.
Overall, great value for the money. I am very impressed with the quality of Alps Mountaineering.
UPDATE 11/17/2008 - I finally had the chance to camp in the Zephyr 2. My 5 year old son and I hiked and camped with a friend and his boys. It was getting dark and starting to rain when we got to the camp site. The Zephyr went up very quick, kept us dry all night through some pretty heavy rain. I love the two doors and vestibules - lots of room for gear and you don't have to worry about brushing up against the side and getting wet from condensation. I slept well with no worries about the wind and rain.
I love the tent! I can't imagine a higher price tent being any better quality than this. Good balance between price, weight, and features.
