Slumberjack Taku Welded Bivy Review

Slumberjack Taku Welded Bivy
Average Reviews:

This is an OK bivy for the price. The Delrin Hoop Frame that holds the bivy away from your face is more or less a joke. Its a plastic rod that is impossible to put into any other shape other than the twisted loop it arrives in in the package. I broke mine trying to get it to loosen up a little bit. Its not necessary anyway. I haven't used mine in any seriously bad weather yet. When I do I'll update this.

Black Diamond Bipod Bivy Bag Review

Black Diamond Bipod Bivy Bag
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For side sleepers like me, the Bi-Pod Bivy is way too tight in both the hip and shoulder areas. Also, I use the Therma-Rest NeoAir mattress which when fully inflated takes-up three inches in height.
I have reordered and have received the heavier but far more spacious Tri-Pod Bivy. Its size is just right for me.
The quality of both models is excellent.
I have two complaints with both models. First, the zip-up opening is much too small. The opening should have at least one more foot to facilitate entry into the bivy. Second, I don't understand why the outer seams don't come pre-sealed from the factory. Instead you are sent a tube of sealer and a syringe and must seal it yourself.

The Bibler Bipod Bivy is both functional and comfortable. A shock-corded Easton aluminum pole arches over the head and shoulder area to provide a roomy space so you won't feel claustrophobic. A large zippered entry on the Bipod Bivy provides easy access, great ventilation and rolls back to reveal a generously sized, no-see-um net door. GoLite Shangri-La 2 Shelter Tent Review

GoLite Shangri-La 2 Shelter Tent
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A great tent for the light weight backpacker. Pros - the tent is light and folds up small. The set up is a little tricky because you are dealing with stakes to hold the tent down. This is more of a rain fly than a tent. There is NO BOTTOM for this tent. They sell a separate bottom for this model or you can buy the bug-screen insert that fits perfectly inside this tent. You can use trekking-poles to hold it up the tent, however this sucks because once you go inside the tent in limits the amount of space you have and you are always fearful of knocking down one or both of the trekking-poles and down comes they tent with you in it. I like to use the corner loops and tie the tent to a tree using string or rope. This way you have more room and you can roll over in the night without worry of bringing down the house. What I don't like about the tent besides the trekking pole thing is you need to stake down the tent to have it work properly and you really need to be in a place that has some place to hang the tent. Another words this tent is not very useful if you are in a place that has a hard ground where stakes don't work and/or a place that has no trees to hang up the tent. One more thing, it really helps to buy a light weight tarp for this tent to sit on. My 6'-8" friend used this tent for five nights while hiking in the Sespe wilderness in 2010. It was the first time he had a back packing tent that actually fit him. This tent can easily and comfortably hold two people and two backpacks, or one giant person like SHAQ.

The innovative, ultra-lite GoLite Shangri-La 2 backcountry shelter delivers serious weather protection for 4-season use and unparalleled space-to-weight ratio with superb durability. It can be used by itself, with the Shangri-La 2 Floor, or with the Shangri-La 2 Nest inner bug tent (note that it doesn't come with a floor). Large enough for two sleepers, this ultra-lite dual-peak design can be pitched with your trekking poles, over paddles or ski poles, or hang it from branches via its top loops.
The reflective stake out loops keep you from tripping in the middle of the night and the hydrophilic thread at the seams expand when wet--sealing the seams and eliminating the need for liquid sealant. The Shangri-La 2 provides 49 square feet of protected interior space. Dual roof vents allow air to circulate and combat condensation build-up. Six Y-stakes, a stake sack, and tent stuff sack are included.
The ultra-lite waterproof SilLite fabric of the Shangri-La 2 sheds both rain and snow, making the Shangri-La 2 surprisingly weather-resistant. Silicone-elastomere fabrics allow their fibers to stretch without separating or breaking, and this makes them stronger than conventional PU-coated (or PU/siliconized) fabrics for a far lower weight. Silicone impregnation means that the silicone completely permeates the fibers and also makes the fabric hydrophobic, so it doesn't soak up water and gain weight.
Specifications:
Usage: 3- to 4-season backpacking
Capacity: 2 sleepers
Area: 49 square feet
Interior height: 45 inches
Packed weight: 1 pound, 13 ounces
Wall fabric: 30D Silicone-elastomere
Floor fabric: None, floorless

Bibler Ahwahnee Tent Review

Bibler Ahwahnee Tent

With this 2 man tent you don't need 2 tents: one for winter and one for the tropics. I was worried before I purchased about condensation on a single wall tent but it turns out this is no problem. Ventillation is excellent - summer or winter! I use it as a one man tent (it's light enough!) and it is sooo roomy and bright. When the weather is fine and warm just unzip both doors for a 6 billion star view. It is unlike any tent I have ever owned. Follow instructions for setting up and it is then easy. It's probably not up to full on winter gales when pitched in stupid places but for anything else it covers it all - and with style!

THE NORTH FACE Tadpole 23 Tent Review

I have to admit I don't actually own this tent but I did purchase a North Face Tadpole back in 1995. It appears to be virtually the same design. I did my own seam sealing back then and it never leaked once. Originally from England I put it through some pretty brutal downpours on the west coast of Scotland. Also slept in it for 3 days of continual English rain. Took it all over Europe and finally brought it to the U.S. where I now live. Solid, well made, well priced and not too heavy. I love my Tadpole even now and would recommend it to anyone looking at 3+ season tents.

Sierra Designs Vapor Light 1 Tent 1-Person 3-Season Review

Sierra Designs Vapor Light 1 Tent 1-Person 3-Season
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

This tent is well worth the purchase for anyone looking to travel light. I use it for motorcycle camping and its light weight and compact size are impressive.
The tent is an absolute cinch to set up. I purchased the optional footprint, and the entire setup, including rain fly, takes just a few minutes. As the prior review notes, the walls are steep which results in adequate space for a true one-person tent. The "vestibule" area under the rain fly is quite small, so don't expect to keep much beneath it.
Tear down is also easy, although I find the plastic clips for both the footprint and rain fly to be somewhat difficult to remove. This may be because I'm a bit concerned about the quality of the plastic "H-clips" and so I'm extra cautious when handling them. At the end of each tent strap (one at each corner), there is a single plastic piece with two H-clips. The plastic clips on the footprint and rain fly attach to the H-clips. The H-clips seem a bit flimsy to me. After just a couple uses, the H-clips are intact, so, at this point, this is more of a concern than a criticism. I have included a photo of the H-clips in the product description. I have no other concerns about the build quality. I have not used the tent in the rain, but have used it in colder weather when the grass is very wet from dew, and there has been no issue with water getting through the floor (there are no seams on the floor). I also have not used it in high winds, so I cannot yet comment on how well it would hold up.
I am 5'5" and about 160 pounds and this tent provides plenty of space for me, both in width and length. It should accommodate a person up to 6' or perhaps taller. Regarding interior dimensions, I use a Thermarest Pro Lite Plus mattress, size large, which is 25" x 77" (63cm x 196cm) and it fits just about perfectly on the tent floor.
Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase and highly recommend it.

Firstlight Tent - 2 Person by Black Diamond Review

Firstlight Tent - 2 Person by Black Diamond
Average Reviews:

I bought this tent in July 2010, and I've used it throroughly in the chilean Andes and Patagonia over the past months.
Under windy conditions (I'm not talking extreme weather), the tent bends in half, and the sides wake you constantly throughout the night with a tapping on your sleeping bag. It's not sturdy at all.
Under rainy conditions it's a bloody mess. Water seeps through the walls and a pool gathers in the bottom.
When it's humid outside, your perspiration condenses on the walls, and you wake in the morning to find a hundred droplets aimed at you. As soon as you move, they all come crashing down on you.
The textile is so fragile it's scary.
The pegs are sharp (they cut your hands when you try to pull them out).
Yes. I sealed the seams.
Yes. I set it up right.
Yes. I let the window open to let air in.
Yes. I have experience. I've been trekking and camping for the past 15 years frequently.
Believe me, the only good thing about this tent is how light it is, but it really is not worth the price you pay. You'd really be better off with a bivy sack.

Nemo Equipment Morpho Air Supported Tent Review

Nemo Equipment Morpho Air Supported Tent
Average Reviews:

PROS
-You can set this thing up in the rain and everything inside will stay dry.
-Comes in a nice waterproof compression sack, so packing it up wet is not a problem.
-Packed, it is very small and light for a tent of this size.
-Very sturdy, high winds don't affect the tent (as long as it is properly staked of course).
-No-see-um sized screening (if you do enough camping, trust me, you will want this).
-Good ventilation
-Turns heads when you set this guy up, not your typical tent.
-Lots of room inside - I'm 5'8" and had plenty of room for all my backpacking gear as well as myself inside the tent. I could sit at either end of the tent with plenty of head room. Could probably even squeeze in 2 people in a pinch.
-Love the option to have either a vestibule or extra interior space.
CONS
-Since it is a single walled tent, condensation can build up on the interior and can get you a little wet when jostled.
-Not freestanding - You have to stake (or tie off) this tent to erect it, so watch out for hard/frozen ground.
-It takes a little practice to set it up quickly.
Overall this is an excellent backpacking tent. The other people in my group were jealous. It was definitely worth the investment.

Marmot Eos 1P Tent Review

Marmot Eos 1P Tent
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this tent with foot print for a wilderness trek at the BSA Philmont high adventure camp. Light and easy to pitch and strike. Zippers work fast and with little sticking. Keeps rain out well (if the fly is pulled down well over the ends). The free standing design is great for shaking off rain or dew and drying in the sun before packing up for the trail. Good in the wind. I bought it for the extra shoulder room and fairly large vestibule while maintaining reasonable weight. Complaints include: the orange color attracts bees, flies and yellow jackets; I'm 5' 10" and I find the head space just a tad bit annoying; not enough pockets, no hanging spots (although the two zipper loops if put at the top can double as a hanging spot); the poles don't fold up into a real small smooth package (someday, they may poke though the carry sack); no separate bag for the poles; the vestibule/entry is only on one side, which limits options when selecting sites to pitch the tent; their is no color coding on the tent straps (as claimed in the instructions) to orient the poles with the tent and footprint. I really like this tent. The solo models all have trade-offs. I feel this tent is an excellent balance of size, weight, quality, price, value, and functionality.

Fast Setup: Efficient two-pole design is strong and simple to use.
Livable: Unique geometry provides maximum interior space, front vestibule and zippered rear window access to rear vestibule.
Versatile: Can be set up as a double-wall tent or with just the fly and footprint for a compact, flyweight shelter at just 1 pound, 9 ounces.

The fly fits well and is well made. Have'nt tested in rain yet but we treat all our gear with seam sealer and spray. Fly Creek UL 1 Tent - 1 Person by Big Agnes Review

Fly Creek UL 1 Tent - 1 Person by Big Agnes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been searching for a well-designed, solo tent under 3 pounds for many years. And to replace my REI Roadster, which I like, but it lacks headroom and width. I have been climbing and backpacking extensively for 35 years. Surprised to finally find specs I have been looking for (incl a weight well under 3 pounds), I bought the Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1 and set it up in my basement. Like all modern, name brand tents, it is well-manufactured. Big Agnes got most of the weight out by thinner fabric materials. My micrometer told me that the fly thickness is about 1.8 mil and the Roadster a more standard 3 mil, etc. My other measurements were very similar to the advertised specs.
I used the Fly Creek solo last week in the Sierra's John Muir Wilderness for a five day trip at 11,000 ft. My search ends! It sets up easily, has free-standing stability and was sufficiently spacious inside for me (I am 6 ft tall). My major concern was the thinner materials, but I saw no compromise during the five days of use. Tent walls seem adequate, though I have no way of knowing the effect of years of use. Probably alright, but therefore good ground protection is even more critical with this ultra light tent. Sans fly, about 18 inches of nylon wall kept the considerable night breeze off me, but allowed good ventilation. Headroom is still lacking, but without fly, I sat up to comfortably read with the tent door opened. Since the door face is angled back, it is also handy for changing clothes while standing inside the tent. I do wish more flat, headspace was designed in though, and a side mesh pocket or two. The last night I added the rain fly, which was taut and guyed out easily and well. Though not usually needed for my 3-season use, I expect the door vestibule will be challengingly adequate.
So I gain one third floor area and lose 1 lb 2 oz relative to my minimalist Roadster. (With my plastic ground cloth, my actual pack weight was 2 lb 8 oz.) More floor area and less weight - kudos to Big Agnes for a fine, game-changing product!
