Coleman 4D XPS Personal-Size LED Lantern Review

Coleman 4D XPS Personal-Size LED Lantern

I ordered two of these lanterns for use during power outages. I opened the first one, inserted batteries and turned the unit on. It is bright and is best suited for placing higher up and letting the light diffuse downward. The one thing I noticed was that the switch seemed cheap and poorly made. In particular after rotating on and off a few times the light would flicker as I had to find the sweet spot for each of the settings on the lantern. At first, I thought it could have been a defective unit, however I took the second one out of the box and it did the exact same thing. This is not something I considered worthy of returning the items for. It worked in each of the settings, but just took a little wiggling of the switch to get it right and is something worth noting for potential buyers.

Coleman CR123A Lithium Pack-Away Lantern

this coleman lantern is very small and very light.
100 lumens of light is doubtfull. The light is very uneven and blinding in your eyes but useless in lighting your area.
A search on the internet came up with $20 +$8 shipping. I would definetely return it had I bought at amazon at the price they are charging. Amazon has the best price 99percent of the time but is way off on this.
I plan to experiment to see if I can even the light. Somebody mentioned using fingernail polish remover to dull the plastic to even the light.
I have several of the small coleman lanterns using 3 AA bats that work better that cost about $10.

Coleman Exponent 4AA Pack-Away Lantern,Black Review

Coleman Exponent 4AA Pack-Away Lantern,Black
Average Reviews:

This is truly an amazing light. However, it is so bright that while illuminated, even on the low setting, most of the viewing angles produce a glare from internal reflective materials that is blinding. It is a very clean bright white light but a dimmer might have been a better option than a two position hi/lo switch. It is good quality but I'm only giving it three stars because of the glare issue.

Lightweight, compact and powerful, the Coleman 4AA Pack-Away Lantern is a great choice for backpackers, trekkers and anyone who wants a high-performance light in a small package. Weighing just 8.3 ounces with the included four AA batteries, the Pack-Away Lantern features a clever telescoping design. Closed, it's not much larger than a deck of cards -- 3.2" x 1.5" x 2.6" -- so it's easy to pack and transport. It opens to a height of 4.875", providing an uncommonly bright LED illumination. The Cree XLamp XR-E LED produces 95 lumens of bright light, amplified by a highly-efficient conical reflector. The 4AA Pack-Away Lantern runs for approximately 12 hours on low and 6 hours on high. The Lantern also features an emergency strobe light, which will run for up to 75 hours on a fresh set of batteries. The lantern uses a simple push-button control, large enough to find and use even when wearing gloves or mittens. Automatic shutoff ensures that the light goes out when the lantern is closed, saving batteries and preventing accidental operation while in a pack. A bail handle can be flipped up to hang the lantern in a tent or from a limb; the handle conveniently snaps to a closed position for storage. Carabiner clip included. Color: black.

Coleman LED Rechargeable Spotlight Review

Coleman LED Rechargeable Spotlight
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I originally saw this at a Bass Pro Shop and was amazed at the brightness and distance the light traveled. It was $69.99 there, I got it for $54.00 from Amazon(huge deal!). I researched quite a lot of rechargeable spotlights before getting this one. And narrowed it down to 4(See here:[...]
The long lasting battery of the LED lights was a huge selling point over the Halogen and HID ones. And this had over double the lumen rating(240 vs 530)compared to the Cyclops CYC-9WS LED Spotlight(The #1 Rechargeable Flashlight at the time of this review) so thats what ultimately made me get this one. I'm not sure why no one has reviewed this baby on Amazon yet. I assume it's because Amazon doesn't keep enough in stock for people to buy.(I got the last one in stock btw). But it has a 5 star rating from 35 reviewers at [...]
I highly recommend this one, if its not in stock at Amazon for $54 when you read this, head over to Walmart's site and get it there for the same price: [...]
- Great Deal, since the MSRP is $69.99!
So in a nutshell:
PROS:
-Long Battery Life (2.5 hours), Halogen and HID bulbs only last ~20-40 min, respectively.
-Super Bright (530 Lumens)
-Very Nice Flood + Spotlight combination - Great for caves.
-Super long throw (Haven't fully tested the distance yet, but it has to be a couple hundred feet, I will update this review when I max it out)
-LED bulbs last basically forever.
-Rechargeable Battery is replaceable.
-Use while plugged into a 12V car adapter or unplug to take anywhere.
-$54 + Free Shipping is a great deal!
-3 Year Manufacturers warranty.
CONS:
-Takes 16 hours to charge from dead to full battery.(Not really a big deal for me)

Coleman 4D Pack-Away LED Lantern Review

Coleman 4D Pack-Away LED Lantern

I've bought some other simialrly priced LED lanterns, and this one is fairly bright. DO NOT expect it to light up a campground like a kersone mantle-type lantern. But for ambient room light during emergencies, and compared to others that claim they have a 10-20 LED's, this 'one-LED' type was brighter than all my others (and they did an especially good job of design to reflcet back light that would normally be 'lost'). And the fold-away capaility is a nice feature since it IS full-size like any Coleman camp lantern. I haven't tested how long it will burn with 4D cells, but definitely use it on the half-power setting. Half-power gives almost as much light as full power. Reason: If you know anything about luminosity, you know that you would need about 4 times the energy to double the light output as perceived by the eye. So save your batteries and stay with the one-half power setting.

The Coleman 4D Pack-Away LED Lantern is a strong, compact, reliable light source for camping, fishing, travel, and as a standby for power outages and other emergencies. The bright, long-lasting Cree XR-E LED provides 140 lumens on the "high" setting. Coleman's exclusive Pack-Away design allows the lantern to telescope into a built-in carry case for compact storage; the space-saving handle rests against the base so it doesn't take up any extra room. The Pack-Away Lantern runs for a full 40 hours on low and 18 hours on high, with a set of 4 D-cell batteries (not included). The LED Lantern is weather-resistant, with durable ABS housing, a snug fit clear globe, chrome-plated globe guards, and an overlapping ventilator top for duty in the great outdoors.

Coleman LED Quad Lantern Review

Coleman LED Quad Lantern
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a long time believer in only using propane lanterns when car camping. Previous battery operated lanterns with florescent bulbs that I have tried have always lacked for sufficient light to eat by let alone cook or setup a tent with.
But, then I discovered the Coleman LED Quad Lantern and everything has changed. This is, by far, the best camping lantern I have ever used! Not only is it super bright, it is smaller and more convenient than a propane lantern - especially since I no longer need to tote around gas canisters.
But, this lantern is more than just a lantern; it provides for personal lighting needs as well. Each of the lantern's four light panels detach and work as rechargeable hand lamps for that rummage in the back of the truck for gear or the scramble to the bathroom sight in the middle of the night. And, with a 1-1/2 hour charge time, that makes these light panels useful for reading in the tent, etc.
It is not only this lantern's overall design that make it great, but the attention to little things as well. For example, the rechargeable light panels are powered by standard AA rechargeable batteries. Unlike other rechargeable light systems where the battery is sealed and inaccessible, if a battery eventually fails, it can be easily replaced with a standard, off the shelf rechargeable battery.
No more propane, no more broken mantles, no more trying to light a propane lantern in the dark. The Coleman LED Quad Lantern is the lantern of the future that I bet all competitors will try to copy.

Combining an area light with four portable lanterns in a single clever unit, the Coleman LED Quad lantern is a versatile choice for indoor or outdoor use. The Quad is equipped with four removable LED panels that hold 24 LED lights total. Users can remove any of the four panels and use them independently, such as when needing a portable light for the bathroom or tent, or they can keep all four attached to the lantern and produce 190 total lumens of light. As a result, the Quad is the perfect light for group camping trips and any other occasion where folks might splinter off into smaller groups during the night. Each of the panels is a fully functioning light, with six 5mm white LEDs, a rechargeable NiMH battery, an independent on/off switch, and a top handle for carrying or hanging. The NiMH battery--which recharges when stored in the lantern base--provides up to 1.5 hours of light on its own. The lantern base, meanwhile, requires eight D-cell batteries (not included), which provide an approximate run time of 75 hours for the entire lantern. Other features include a main on/off switch located on top of the lantern, a light range of 26 feet, and a limited five-year warranty.
About Coleman More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark.
In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

Smith and Wesson Galaxy 3 Watt Cree LED 4-in-1 Flashlight/Lantern/Flasher Review

Smith and Wesson Galaxy 3 Watt Cree LED 4-in-1 Flashlight/Lantern/Flasher
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For most casual flashlight users this is the one to get. No matter how bright they are, most flashlights focus light into a narrow beam. In many cases, that's not what's required. This unit comes with two plastic screw-on caps, one clear and the other tinted red. Each cap contains a silvered cone inside which is inverted such that the tip of the cone points towards the beam when installed. When screwed on, the clear cap's silvered cone redirects all the light output, which would normally emerge in a narrow beam, into a 360 degree flood pattern with minimal loss of total light output. When you need a narrow beam again just unscrew and remove the clear cap. Also works fine with AAA lithium cells, which are much lighter than standard alkaline cells. Mine weighs just a little over 4 ounces with 3 Energizer AAA lithium cells installed. The lower weight also makes it easier for the magnet, located on one end, to hold the flashlight securely to any sheet steel, such as a car body. If you press and hold the ON/OFF switch for 3 seconds the beam flashes at a rate slightly faster than once per second and continues to flash after releasing the switch. Press the switch once again to turn off. With the red cap installed you have yourself an emergency flasher. Solidly built from machined aluminum. About 6 inches long. The most useful flashlight I've ever owned.

The Smith & Wesson Galaxy 4 in 1 Flashlight is an all new item for this year. It is first, a flashlight with 100 lumens of long distance CREE LED brilliant white light and a bulb that is guaranteed for life to never break or burn out. Run time is up to 12 hours on a single set of 3 AAA batteries (included) and the type II anodized aluminum body is weather and corrosion resistant. Secondly, use the included white filter and you instantly have one of the best and brightest camping lanterns you've ever seen. Hang it from a tree or the tent and illuminate everyone's path. The white lantern filter is also great for auto repair allowing mechanics to easily view the entire engine by simply hanging the light from the hood. Switch to the red filter (included) and you have an excellent emergency signal or low brightness "night light" great for reading or moving around the house/campsite without disturbing other guests. Hold the button for 3 seconds and the light begins to flash continuously until you click the button again which is great as a distress signal to alert others of your presence. Have a flat tire? The bottom of this handy flashlight is magnetized allowing it to easily be attached to any flat metal surface such as fenders and hoods. Included with each flashlight is 3 AAA batteries, white lantern filter, red lantern filter and a metal carabineer clip. Limited lifetime warranty.

Small Package - Bright Light CREE XLamp Warm White Camping LED Lantern - 110 Lumens

This is by far, the most useful lantern I own.... The natural colored light is AWESOME.
1.) It's small, and easy to put in the backpack
2.) On low, (which is not much different from high) it runs a LONG time.
3.) It takes my rechargeable batteries easily (some lanterns are a bit too small such as my xb glorb).
4.) The light is NOT obnoxious, it has a tint that is just as good as an incandescent.
5.) The light output is appropriate for it's size (NO, It's not a gas lantern, but as far as LED's go, it's fantastic).I have purchased two from this vendor and will purchase a couple more.
If you currently own old school LED's and hate the blueish light output, you won't regret purchasing this... It looks so close to normal light!
I just had a power outage due to some damage to lines, I was comfortable, able to navigate around my house, and suffered NO eyestrain. Two units were enough to give me ample light to take a bath, read, play cards, fix a sandwich and find batteries for my A.M. radio.
1/4/10 little lights are still going great, I love the color of the natural light. P.S. Eneloops will not last as long as long as 2650 mah batteries if you are using rechargeables.

It's advertised at 70 lumens, while other similar size lanterns with 3 AA batteries rarely 'boast' about any illumination measurement. However, this one does have ONE 'configuration' advantage over other similar-priced mini lantern models. You can remove the light diffuser, and hang it as a bare-bulb light, upside down, from the top of your tent (or house ceiling if you've pre-placed a hook in the middle of the room's ceiling). By doing that, you considerably boost the light output...in fact I've tried other mini lanterns in the price range, and none come close to this one--providing that you use it in the bare bulb, upside down configuration I've just described. (With the difusser on, and sitting on a table, it's nothing but ordinary.) If you've ever used a lantern, you know that the higher it's placed inside a room/tent, the more 'even' the illumination. (By the way, it took 2 people 20 minutes to figure out that to insert the batteries, you have to "twist" the bottom...as there are no such instructions or guide arrows to assist you.)

Rayovac SE3DLN Sportsman Extreme 300-Lumen LED Lantern Review

Rayovac SE3DLN Sportsman Extreme 300-Lumen LED Lantern
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just received this product so I will defer commenting on battery life until later. Overall I have been very pleased and surprised with this product. First off, this lantern is fairly compact...I was under the impression that this would be larger from the pictures but once I opened it up, I was pleasingly surprised. The unit is very compact and feels very sturdy. There is rubber on the base and around the lower portion of the lantern, the switch is very easy to operate and has 3-modes (High, Low, and Strobe). The entire top/globe can be unscrewed and hung upside down (clip in the base) to use as a room or tent light in "bare bulb" mode. Overall I have been very impressed with the output of this lantern as well. This is a very bright lantern for it's compact size; outshining normal 4D fluorescent U-tubed lanterns and a coleman pack-away LED lantern. The diffuser is also very pleasing with no rings, lines, or shadows to speak of. In bare bulb mode, the light is almost too bright for your eyes but works well if it's hung high overhead (so you're not looking directly at the unit). Low mode is also very useful and brighter than your typical "nightlight" levels in other LED lanterns "low" modes. Overall I am very impressed with this product and plan to purchase more of these units for use while night fishing, camping, and to use during power failures.
Update (10/31/09): Just an update, I recently used this light in a power outage and it performed great. Bright and the batteries are still going strong. I also purchased 2 additional units and with just 3-D batteries each, who can complain! This is a great compact lantern.

Coleman Cool Zephyr Ceiling Fan with Light Review

Coleman Cool Zephyr Ceiling Fan with Light
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've got two of these little fan/light combos and I love them. They're perfect for car/canoe camping, but would be on the bulky side for backpacking. I also use them in the bunk ends of my pop up camper. They do a great job of circulating the air and fending off condensation.
Used one on a recent canoe camping trip in some pretty hot, humid weather and it allowed me to sleep comfortably and remain sane. I woke up to zero condensation in my tent as well since the air circulation was so good with the fan in use for most of the night (I did turn it off in the early morning hours because it was getting a little chilly).
The fan moves a decent amount of air for a small one or two man tent (or bunk end), and the light is adequate to read by. The night light will provide enough light to see your way around if you need it.
You can also, with the creative use of small bungee cords, direct the air flow directly on your face if you're as hot natured as I am.
It seems to make good use of the battery power, too. I haven't run one out of power yet.
The magnet that hold the fan in place is VERY strong, yet easy to remove with a simple twist.
The fan blades are made out of a soft foam so there's no chance of injury from sticking a finger in the blades.
My only complaints are:
1. Switches are easily turned on when in transit (I always turn one of the batteries upside down to counter this problem).
2. The switches are impossible to see once you've got it up and running. So you just have to guess which switch does what and which direction to slide it. I guess over time it will become second nature, but right now I have trouble keeping it straight.
All in all, I'd say this product is everything that you would expect. I'd recommend it to anyone who will be canoe camping or car camping without electricity. I've been very impressed with it, as have my friends who camp with me. Several of them have told me that this is on their Christmas lists this year.

Keep your tent cool, comfortable, and well lit on warm summer or fall evenings with the Coleman Cool Zephyr ceiling fan, which includes a built-in light. The Cool Zephyr features an adjustable two-speed airflow control, so you can set the fan to high if you're desperate for circulation or low if you just need a steady breeze. The separately controlled light, meanwhile, includes four white LEDs and one amber LED. The white LEDs give you a nice reading or game-playing light, while the amber LED makes a terrific night light. Best of all, the Cool Zephyr attaches to any tent with its powerful magnetic plates. The Cool Zephyr runs on four D-cell batteries (sold separately).
