(More customer reviews)Pros: Well constructed, warmer and more durable than a typical nylon tent.
Cons: Heavy, appears to be not good for wet weather. To begin with, I am an occasional car camper, maybe 2 camping trips a year. As of the writing of this review I have only assembled it in my yard, not taken it camping. I will update if need be.
I had been looking for a canvas tent for a while but they generally start at about $500 for small ones and go way up from there, so when I saw this tent at $300 I decided to give it a shot, despite there being no reviews for it anywhere.
The tent arrived in good condition. This is a heavy tent, 55 pounds, it is for car camping. You would not want to carry it very far unless you were using mules or something. The canvas material itself is thinner than I expected, but thicker than your typical nylon tent.
You need at least 2 people to put up this tent, 3 would be better. The assembly instructions are not good. They are vague and the diagram is inadequate and black and white but the tent itself is color coded for the shock poles, which is good because it makes the instructions mostly unnecessary for anyone who has ever put up a tent before. I had to go look at a picture of the tent online to finally figure out how it was supposed to look assembled. After seeing the end result it only took about 5-10 minutes to assemble with the help of 1 other person.
I really like that the guy ropes are built into the tent at the appropriate points and have well constructed built-in pockets to store the lines.
The design is basically a large floorless shell, with 2 smaller rooms that are hung from the inside of the shell. The rooms are optional and the material of the rooms is a rather thin nylon with a somewhat cheap plastic material floor to keep water out. You will definitely want to put at least a tarp under the rooms, I will be using a tarp and moving blankets. Keep in mind that the rooms anchor to the ground like a guy line, so it would be difficult to put a large tarp under the entire shell. I found it better to assemble the shell, then tarp under the rooms leaving space around the tarp to anchor the rooms into the ground. Once inside the interior rooms you easily notice how much warmer this tent is than a nylon tent.
There is very little in the way of preventing water from getting into the shell part of the tent. If there is even a chance of rain where you are going you will want to use the interior rooms.
It is quoted as a 6 person tent, but with both rooms assembled, you wouldn't want more than 4 adults, 2 per room. If you did not include the rooms you could go with 6 comfortably but you would need to tarp and pad the inside and if it rained you would get wet.
The tent is quite tall, 7 feet at the apex but it does have sloping sides. Each room looks to be able to hold a queen air mattress and there is space between each room for gear. The rooms themselves have two zippered doors, one solid and one mesh, which is nice for warm weather.
The tent comes with some extra components like guy ropes, material for patching and a large (but cheaply made) duffel for packing all the components together. At 55 pounds I plan to buy a higher quality duffel when the included one gives out.
Overall, I am happy with the purchase and would recommend this tent, but I have yet to field test the tent.
