Adventure Medical S.O.L. Thermal Bivvy Sack Review

Adventure Medical S.O.L. Thermal Bivvy Sack

I recently purchased this item and I was initially impressed with the material and design. I used the bivy as a sleeping bag during a summer backpacking trip instead of taking my normal down bag along. It was super light and it didn't take up alot of space in my backpack. The temp dropped into the upper 60's at night and all I needed to do was cover myself with the bivy. I didn't even get into the bag. There were no condensation problems. I was totally comfortable. The material isn't crinkly like a space blanket.
The two problems I encountered were the bivvies I purchased did not have the foot vents, even though Adventure Medical Kits advertises there are. The thread used for the velcro is weak. Some of the stitching is unraveling from the velcro and I've only opened the bag portion a few times. That's the reason for the 3 star rating.
Otherwise, it's a good product and it definitely could save your life in a survival situation. Be gentle on the material though. If you want a cheap, featherweight summer sleeping bag, this is the way to go also.

All Weather Blanket Review

All Weather Blanket

OK, I have reviewed the HeatSheet blanket and Bivvie before, it's a great product for survival where space and weight are significant considerations- the two person size or the bivvie weigh about 3oz, and are about the size of a bar of soap.
At the far end of the scale would be a good high quality military surplus wool blanket- 6+ pounds. Good for a roomy trunk, your SUV, cabin or in the home.
Here, in the middle is the "Space' or "All Weather" blanket. A super tough laminate of fiber scrim and aluminized plastic, it weighs 12oz, and is about the size of a trade paperback book. There are several advantages of the "space blanket" (note the name is also used for the super-thin one-use mylar blankets, don't get them confused):
1.Re-usable over and over, these will take a beating.
2.More uses- they can be used as a tarp, picnic blanket, or on the floor of your tent to protect the tent bottom and reflect heat back. This is my primary use, I find that one of these- PLUS a pad- works about twice as well as a pad only.
3.They have grommets so are easier to use.
4. In the desert, they make a good sun protection tarp.
So, if one can afford the weight and room, I'd suggest one of these for survival purposes on a hiking trip (one of these plus a HeatSheet bivvie would be even better). Yes, another 12 oz is a little much, but with one of these for two hikers, it's not so bad.
On the other end of the scale, if you don't want a big heavy wool blanket cluttering up your trunk- or want another layer in "cold country" then this is also a good choice. It's also good for the office.
Get the orange/silver version, as it works for signaling too.

Will disintegrate if stored in the heat.. I've tried a few of these as they work great for back packing lite.. but they just don't last very long in the Arizona heat.

I have used mylar "space" blankets for the past 30 years for near innumerable projects. Want to make a solar oven? here's a tool to allow that. Increase the rating on your sleeping bag by 20 degrees (put the mylar INSIDE the bag), I've made emergency ponchos from them while backpacking. Ground cloths, signal devices, sun awnings (in this mode they help provide cooling), insulation for coolers, animal shelters, a lining for an incubator.
They don't have to wait around in your car or "read bag" to find uses! However, I carry them in each vehicle, I have one in each of my various (depending on purpose) "ready bags", in emergency kits made for the kids and in all the first aid kits in the house, vehicles, the ranch and other such haunts.
This little piece of plastic may well be one of the premier tools of all time.

Emergency Sleeping Bag, Survival Bag, Emergency Zone® Brand, Reflective Blanket Review

Emergency Sleeping Bag, Survival Bag, Emergency ZoneĀ® Brand, Reflective Blanket

Bought several of these to hand out to friends. While they look flimsy they are quite difficult to puncture. The conductive metalized surface is on the inside. In bright light you can see through one. These are so much warmer than a blanket made of the same material (I have both). The bag is about the size of a 'big hand' and can easily fit in the car, tackle box, even a coat pocket. They are very reflective and would be easy to spot from the air, just 'crunch them up' so there are many different reflecting angles. When they arrived, I unpacked one and tried it at 70 degrees F and became too warm in about 2 min... Once you unfold this thing, you will never get it back in the bag so I use a 'vacuum seal' food bag for used ones. Highly recommend everyone have one for each person. Keep a couple in the car, boat, camper, house, etc.
2010 FOLLOW UP:My lightweight sleeping bag was getting cold so I put my 'normal sleeping bag' INSIDE one of these, it made quite a difference...

Emergency Thermal Blankets (4 Pack) Review

I've played with a couple of different brands of space blankets and these blankets are of fine quality. They suffer the usual short comings of this material (tears spread easily) but on the grand scale of space blanket brands, you are getting one of the better quality blankets. For example, one of the cheaper brands I have tried experienced flaking of the mylar coating after (admittedly) rough handling. The brand being reviewed here did not suffer from this flaking.Definitely recommended.
