(More customer reviews)This is my first aluminum tent frame. I couldn't wait and put the tent together so I found an unused office at work and set it up in there. The tent comes with no instructions. after a less than 10 minutes of trial and error I was able to set it up. Tip: set up the poles that go through the sleeves first. Those poles go in the holes at the end of the seam that extends from the sleeve. It looks wierd, but do it anyway. The third pole becomes obvious where it goes. The aluminum poles are very nice, shockcorded and assemble easily. The three poles are all the same length and are interchangeable. Once the poles are in place, the tent is free standing, but the tub floor of the tent appears to be a bit tweaked. Perhaps staking the tent to the ground will help it lay out better. The stakes that come with it are pretty lame and will go straight to the recycling bin.
I am 6'1 200 pounds. This is the first tent I have been in that felt roomy. I can lay down lengthwise and have at least 6 inches of room at both my feet and head. Nice. In addition, there is enough headroom to easily sit up inside this tent. More headroom means that the tent will be more vulnerable to high winds, so take precautions. After years of canvas military tents, this is like heaven. There are quick release clips on the pole tabs that lock into the rainfly. Seems to be a reasonably well thought-out tent. From the images I saw online, I thought it was a "clip" type tent on a freestanding frame, but it has two poles that run through two sleeves each, and everything else clips from tent to the various poles. The third pole gives the tent its semi-rectangular floorplan, and is connected to the tent entirely by clips. The walls of the tent are about 50% mesh, in a mixed pattern, some low in the tent walls, some high. When unzipped, the door swings to the side, it does not lay on the ground where it must be avoided when passing through. Nice touch. The Door zipper pulls on the inside of the tent are glow in the dark. A mesh tent loft is included, but I did not set it up. The poles have only a single curve that follows the natural single curve of the tent. The poles are not twisted into unnatural shapes.
The floor feels a bit thin, but I am willing to make that tradeoff for lighter weight.
The tent/fly and poles weigh in at 6.01 pounds with the tent bag and the poles bag. I did not include the stakes since I will replace them anyway.
The tent disassembled and was packed up in less than 10 minutes (there were no stakes to pull out). Tents never seem to fold up as tightly as they come from the factory, but this tent was easy to fold up and with my sloppy roll-up, it still fit comfortably in the factory tent bag and measured 6x22 (inches).
I looked at a lot (20+) of tents in a wide range of prices up to $900. There are really very few that can compete with this tent for design and price. After it is used a few times, the hidden quality of the tent will reveal itself. For now, I am satisfied with my choice. From the specifications alone, this tent should sell for a lot more money.
I plan to use this as a two-person tent with room to store all gear in side the tent. I am going to put this tent in my Bug-Out Backpack. At 6 pounds, it is one of the lightest, roomiest, structurally sound tents I have researched.
This tent is *perfect* for me. If I had one improvement to suggest, I would suggest thicker aluminum poles, but the ones included in the tent seem fine for 99% of what Mother Nature can throw at me.
I am getting a nice set of stakes for when I set it up outside. MSR Ground Hog Stake Kit
This tent has the "Jack Seal of Approval".
Buy this tent while you can. It is a steal.
